About

🪴 Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegated is an exceptionally rare collector's plant that combines the luxurious dark foliage of Black Velvet with stunning splashes variegation. Although often referred to as "Pink Variegated", the variegation is technically albo; however, the deep, velvety foliage creates a beautiful pink appearance that gives this plant its highly sought-after look. The almost-black leaves provide incredible contrast, making every new leaf a true statement piece.

🌿 Unlike many variegated plants that rely solely on colour, this Alocasia offers both texture and contrast. Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for shelves, cabinets, and smaller growing spaces, while its ever-changing variegation ensures no two plants are ever exactly alike. As each new leaf unfurls, you'll be rewarded with unique patterns that make this a highly sought-after addition to any rare plant collection.

🌱 A perfect choice for collectors looking for something truly special, this variety combines rarity, beauty, and compact growth into one unforgettable houseplant.

Why you'll love it

  • pink, cream, and white variegation
  • Luxurious velvety dark foliage
  • Compact size ideal for shelves and cabinets
  • Every leaf develops unique patterns
  • A standout collector's Alocasia

Care guide

☀️ Light: Bright indirect for maintaining healthy growth and strong variegation. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, particularly during the middle of the day, as the velvety foliage can scorch. Due to its variegation, this plant will benefit from slightly brighter conditions than a standard Black Velvet.

💧 Watering: Allow the top few centimetres of substrate to dry before watering thoroughly. Keep the substrate lightly moist but never waterlogged, as Alocasia are sensitive to excess moisture around the roots. Reduce watering during cooler months when growth naturally slows.

🪴 Substrate: A free-draining substrate that retains moisture while allowing excellent airflow around the roots is essential. Alocasia thrive when their roots have access to both moisture and oxygen.

🌱 Recommended Substrate: Soil Ninja Alocasia Mix or Soil Ninja Aroid Mix

Additional Tips:

  • Prefers temperatures between 18-28°C.
  • Enjoys humidity levels of 60% or higher, although it can adapt to average household conditions.
  • Avoid cold draughts, sudden temperature fluctuations, and temperatures below 15°C.
  • Feed regularly during active growth throughout spring and summer with NurtureSystem No.1 PowerGrow.
  • Like many Alocasia, it may slow down or temporarily pause growth during winter, using a grow light during this period will help with continued growth.
  • Monitor regularly for spider mites, which are particularly attracted to the velvety foliage.
  • Pink variegation is actually a form of albo variegation. The lighter sectors often appear pink against the dark, almost black leaves, creating the distinctive contrast collectors love.

💡 Please note: Care advice is intended as a general guide. Growing conditions vary between homes, seasons, and environments, so adjustments may be needed to suit your specific conditions.

Guarantee

📦 We take great care in selecting, preparing, and packing every plant we send. Our goal is for all plants to arrive healthy and ready to settle into their new home, and we stand by the quality of what we ship. For this reason, we offer a 7-day live arrival guarantee on all plants.

🪴 Plants are living things, and occasional minor cosmetic marks or changes can happen during transit. This is completely normal and doesn't affect the long-term health of the plant. Some plants may also take a few days − or sometimes a little longer − to adjust after delivery before showing new growth.

📸 We photograph each plant carefully and will always note any visible blemishes within the promotions page or prior to dispatch. Despite careful packing, the shipping process itself can be stressful, and it's normal for plants to need time to acclimate to their new environment once they arrive. During this period, temporary leaf changes or slower growth are to be expected and are nothing to worry about.

📬 If you experience any issues with your order, please contact us at help@thearoidarium.co.uk within 7 days of delivery so we can help as quickly as possible. When getting in touch, we ask that you include your order number, full name, and a few clear photos of the plant so we can assess the situation accurately.

⏱️ To ensure fairness, compensation cannot be guaranteed if we are not notified within the 7-day period. We're also unable to offer a guarantee once the plant has been repotted, as we can't account for changes in care or environment beyond this point.

Shipping

📦 Orders containing plants are dispatched Tuesday to Thursday to ensure they arrive safely. Orders without plants may also be dispatched on Fridays. We aim to dispatch all orders within 1-3 working days.

Priority shipping orders are prioritised for dispatch and will usually be sent the following working day (excluding Fridays for plant orders).

Orders placed Friday to Sunday are prepared on Monday, with plant orders dispatched from Tuesday onwards. (If we are able to fit in any plant order shipments on Monday, we will send you a notification stating dispatch)

Please note that dispatch times may be longer during busy periods or when weather conditions aren't suitable for shipping. We're unable to ship orders on bank holidays.

Each order is packed by hand with care to ensure plants arrive safely.

🚚 Most orders arrive within 2-4 working days from point of order, unless stated otherwise on the product page. Delivery times may be longer during busy periods or when weather conditions aren't suitable.

HELP AND SOLUTIONS:

Everything you need to know: Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated'

What light levels is suitable for my Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated'?

Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated' grows best in bright indirect light. Because variegated leaves contain less chlorophyll, they benefit from brighter conditions than standard Black Velvet forms, but direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the foliage and fade the variegation.

Aim for:

  • 8,000-15,000 Lux
  • Bright rooms near east or north-facing windows
  • Filtered sunlight rather than direct sun

Rotate your plant occasionally to encourage even growth.

Is Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated' poisonous to animals and children?

Yes. Like all Alocasia, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation if ingested.

Keep out of reach of:

  • Cats
  • Dogs
  • Small children

If chewed or eaten, irritation of the mouth, throat and digestive system may occur.

Why are the leaves of my Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated' turning yellow?

Yellowing leaves can occur for several reasons:

  • Overwatering
  • Soil remaining wet for too long
  • Low light levels
  • Natural ageing of older leaves
  • Stress from sudden environmental changes

Occasionally, an older leaf may yellow and die back as a new leaf emerges. This is a normal part of the plant's growth cycle.

When and how do I repot my Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated'?

Repot when:

  • Roots begin emerging from drainage holes
  • Growth slows despite good care
  • The pot becomes crowded with roots or corms

Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one and use Soil Ninja Alocasia Mix or Soil Ninja Aroid Mix.

After repotting:

  • Water lightly
  • Keep warm
  • Avoid fertilising for 2-4 weeks while the roots settle

Alocasia generally prefer being slightly snug rather than over-potted.

When and how do I fertilise my Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated'?

Feed during active growth from spring through early autumn using a balanced houseplant fertiliser such as NurtureSystem No.1 PowerGrow.

General guidance:

  • Every 2-4 weeks during the growing season
  • Reduce or stop feeding during winter
  • Always follow the manufacturer's recommended dilution rate

Consistent feeding supports healthy growth and helps maintain strong variegation.

How do I water my Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated' correctly?

Allow the top portion of the substrate to begin drying before watering again.

The aim is:

  • Moist but not waterlogged soil
  • Excellent drainage
  • Never leaving the plant sitting in water

During warmer months watering will be more frequent, while winter watering should be reduced.

Overwatering is one of the most common causes of problems with Alocasia.

How do I take cuttings from my Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated'?

Alocasia cannot be propagated from stem cuttings like many other houseplants.

Instead, propagation is carried out through:

  • Corms
  • Offsets
  • Division during repotting

Corms can be collected during repotting and grown in a warm, humid environment until roots and new growth appear.

For best results, wait until offsets have developed their own roots before separating them from the parent plant.

What humidity levels does Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated' prefer?

Alocasia 'Black Velvet Pink Variegated' enjoys moderate to high humidity. While it can adapt to average household conditions, it performs best with humidity levels around 60-80%.

Higher humidity can encourage:

  • Better leaf development
  • Reduced browning on leaf edges
  • More consistent growth

Avoid positioning the plant near radiators, heaters or cold draughts.
